Overview

This is an original German pre-WWII experimental fire service helmet, produced during the late Weimar / early Reichswehr transitional period (circa 1929–1934). Germany tested this helmet as part of an effort to replace traditional leather fire helmets with lighter materials.

The shell uses Vulkanfiber, a compressed cellulose-based material briefly explored before being abandoned.

This video explains why Vulkanfiber was tested and why it was rejected before WWII.

Historical Background

Germany never adopted Vulkanfiber helmets for military use. Authorities also did not issue them during World War II. Field trials showed that Vulkanfiber failed to provide adequate impact and heat protection.

As a result, Germany moved quickly to steel fire helmets, including the M1934, which proved far more effective. Vulkanfiber helmets therefore represent a brief experimental phase in civil and fire-protection development.

Construction & Features

This helmet displays several correct period characteristics:

  • Pressed Vulkanfiber shell

  • Rolled exterior edge for added strength

  • Screened side vents for heat and smoke dissipation

  • Period German fire-service liner

    • Rear attachment points for a removable leather neck/shoulder heat apron

Why This Helmet Matters

Although authorities rejected Vulkanfiber, surviving examples offer rare insight into interwar experimentation and early material science limits. This helmet helps document how European civil-protection equipment evolved before steel became the standard.

Collectors and researchers value these pieces for their context, not combat association.

Collector Context

This helmet should be understood as an educational and historical artifact, not a combat helmet and not a WWII issue item. It illustrates a transitional moment in fire and civil safety history rather than wartime service.
